Bridal Wedding Dress Fabric Types

We have a range of different wedding dress fabrics to choose from.

We here to support you in your decision-making on what type of material will suit your style of gown or source the fabric if you know exactly what you’d like.

Ziva Wedding Dresses are all made with high-quality fabrics and tailored to suit your body shape.

Our fabric suppliers supply silk, taffeta, silk blended satin, handmade lace, french stretch crepe, mikado satin, Georgette, and fine chiffon just to name a few.

If you’re in the stages of planning your wedding dress, here is an overview of the fabric types commonly used. We have also provided some tips for selecting the right fabric for your dress choice.

Consider the time of year that you are getting married. Heavier materials or highly structured dresses are warmer to wear, so would be preferable for a Winter and/or Autumn wedding.

It is also important to think about how wearable the fabric is, aside from looking your best, feeling comfortable and being able to move (and dance!) freely is also crucial for a happy and enjoyable wedding day.

Ziva Wedding Dress Lace

Guipure Lace for lovely structure

This is a lovely thick lace that sits perfectly for a structured look. It can be used for lace appliqué to add some feature lace also.

It’s connected with motifs, the thread itself rather than on mesh/tulle.

Embroidered Lace for Dimension and Texture

To create embroidered lace, delicate patterns are tightly stitched onto an illusion base, forming the appearance of an applique. Then the lace is embroidered with beading or sequin lace pieces on a separate tulle layer, creating depth and dimension.

This is a lace fabric made on net with raised motifs outlined with beads and cord. The motifs are outlined with silk cord giving the lace more definition.

3D Lace

3D lace or laser lace is a relatively recent innovation and allows extremely striking patterns to be made using 3-dimensional designs. It is a very popular lace choice for brides.

Chantilly Lace

Chantilly lace fabric is a type of bobbin lace traditionally created out of black threads and featuring floral or botanical patterns on a point d’esprit or net background.

Its name originates from the city of Chantilly in France. It creates a gorgeous vintage feel and is even more divine when handsewn beading is added.

Satin is a smooth fabric. It has a shine to one side and a matte finish on the other.

Satin resists wrinkles, holds beading and other embellishments well. It’s an extremely versatile fabric, but is best used for formal, structured dresses such as A-line or ballgown.

Satin is a heavy fabric, and is ideal for autumn or winter weddings.

Satin Wedding Dresses

Crepe backed satin is the perfect choice for bridal, bridesmaid or ball gowns due to its luxurious, soft drape.

Chiffon is a very fine, transparent fabric. It can be a preferred choice for veils or as a soft layer over other fabrics such as satin or silk. Chiffon can be made from silk but tends to mark very easily if water or perspiration touches it.

Our chiffon wedding dresses are made from a blend of fine polyester thread so that it isn’t as easily stained.

Chiffon Wedding Dresses

Lace is the most elegant piece to wear on your wedding day; it brings grace to any dress and adds a touch of class to any bride.

Organza is a flowing and sheer like georgette or chiffon. It is a little stiffer than these fabrics, so it can handle beading and embroidery.

Organza holds its shape well and doesn’t crush easily which makes it ideal for light ruffles or pleats.

Organza wedding dresses have large volume in the skirt.

It is luxurious, resilient and strong but a lightweight fabric.

Silk, although a natural fiber, tends to repel water, so you may want to avoid it if you’re getting married on a hot summer’s day.

Silk is best worn for lightweight unstructured sheath style dresses where the fabric can hang naturally on the body.

Silk Wedding Dresses

Taffeta is a medium weight crisp fabric that rustles as you move!

It makes beautiful creases and is great for ruching.

Taffeta has a shimmery finish and is usually made with silk. It is best suited to A-line or ball gown style dresses which have netting layers underneath.

Taffeta is ideal for an evening wedding as the shimmery fabric attracts light.

Taffeta Wedding Dresses

Tulle is a very fine netted fabric, that is quite soft to the touch.

Often when you think of tulle, you imagine a ballerina’s tutu, however, the tulle we speak about for wedding dresses is far more delicate. Often our dressmaker will sew lace designs onto tulle to recreate the desired look.

Tulle is commonly used in veils and can be eye-catching when layered to form the skirt of a wedding dress.
